HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF SURVEYING AND GEOINFORMATICS

The journey toward the establishment of the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics began on 28th November 2012, when the University Senate approved its commencement as a specialised programme within the Department of Estate Management. This visionary step was subsequently endorsed by the University Governing Council during its meeting held from 3rd to 5th April 2013. Following this, the National Universities Commission (NUC) conducted a successful resource verification exercise between 22nd and 24th March 2015, which led to the formal approval for the intake of the pioneer set of students during the 2015/2016 academic session. Recognising the rapid growth and strategic importance of the discipline, the Governing Council granted the Department full autonomy on 11th June 2019, establishing it as a distinct academic entity within the Faculty of Environmental Design and Management.

Since its inception, the Department has successfully produced five sets of graduates who are making significant strides on the global stage. The excellence of our academic training is evidenced by our alumni who are currently pursuing advanced M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in
prestigious institutions within and outside Nigeria. Notably, our products are competing favourably in emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence and Spatial Intelligence across Europe and other continents. Many have already attained professional status as Registered Surveyors, while others are excelling in diverse sectors including engineering and the academia. Despite being a relatively young department, we take immense pride in our record of academic distinction, having produced the second-best overall graduate in the entire University.

The vision and mission of the Department are centred on being a beacon of excellence in geospatial science, advancing education and innovation to foster sustainable land administration and environmental management. We are committed to developing competent, creative, and technologically savvy professionals through high-quality, industry-relevant curricula that integrate traditional surveying with cutting-edge digital technologies. This commitment to practical impact is reflected in our contribution to key developmental projects on campus, such as the digital administration of staff quarters using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). By maintaining a faculty of seasoned and experienced lecturers, the Department continues to contribute tremendously to the human capital needed for economic growth, ensuring our graduates remain globally competitive and ethically grounded in the service of society.
